Lihir (aka Niolam) Island is the largest island in the Lihir Group, in the northern part of New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. The opening of a large gold mine in 1995, operated by Lihir Gold Limited, has lead to a rapid changes of the local society and economy. The study area comprises of newly developed residential areas, longstanding villages, industrial and commercial land, garden land and forested areas.

 

The plan constitutes a primary guide for future urban and town planning, including urban growth, Structure Plans, Master Plans and major projects. It aims to provide a coherent framework for an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development of the urban area around the town of Londolovit.
