Lihir, Papua New Guinea
Client | Lihir Gold Limited
Lihir (aka Niolam) Island is the largest island in the Lihir Group, in the northern part of New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. The opening of a large gold mine in 1995, operated by Lihir Gold Limited, has led to a rapid changes of the local society and economy.
In conjunction with the development of the Londolovit Structure Plan, Lihir, PNG, a set of development controls were developed to assure the orderly development of the Londolovit town centre. The controls follow a set of key design principles and strategies to maximise site amenity, the lifespan of structures and public domain amenity, while minimising environmental impacts and conflicts between neighbours, to encourage a cohesive townscape that strengthens the community. The development controls were prepared in accordance with relevant planning instruments and complement the current PNG regulations.
