2 Figtree Drive is the first development of the new SOPA Masterplan for Sydney Olympic Park’s town centre. The design proposal aims to define a new street character, of podium buildings reinforcing the street edge with towers above.
The proposal utilises the requirement for a view corridor in the masterplan to create a major garden through the site. The buildings are positioned around this garden, to create a generously scaled landscape that opens out to the north and maximises the views of the existing fig trees to the north east. The garden is designed as a series of small rooms to create a mixture of intimate spaces.
The built form responds to the context, with a new 31 storey tower to the SE corner that will form a ‘gateway’ to the precinct with Opal Towers opposite. A lower free standing building to the NE responds to the scale of the existing figtrees that form a new courtyard to the retail space.
The materiality further articulates the built form, with two storey brickwork elements to the podium, and the towers defines by masonry frames and metal and glass infill elements.
